Defence Minister Rajnath Singh started his trip by visiting Ladakh on July 17. He arrived early morning at Leh airport accompanied by the CDS General Bipin Rawat and Army Chief General M.M. Naravane. Before departing for Ladakh he tweeted, “Leaving for Leh on a two-day visit to Ladakh and Jammu-Kashmir. I shall be visiting the forward areas to review the situation at the borders and also interact with the Armed Forces personnel deployed in the region. Looking forward to it.”

The aim of the day long visit is to carry out a security review of the region due to the LAC conflict with China. From Leh the Defence Minister went to Stankna and Lukung. At Stankna, which is near Leh, he reviewed the readiness of the troops which included a para drop and scoping of weapons. Specialised training is required for high altitude and mountain warfare in which the India Army has long experience. Lukung is the last Ladakhi village north of Pangong Tso. Pangong Tso is another area of conflict where the issues have not been resolved so far between the Indian Army and the PLA but talks are on.

The Defence Minister’s visit follows the surprise visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Ladakh on July 3 during which he also addressed troops and stressed about India’s resolve in dealing with the India-China LAC conflict.

Indian and Chinese troops are involved in a bitter standoff in many areas on the LAC in eastern Ladakh since May. The situation had escalated with the violent clashes in Galwan Valley in which 20 Indian army personnel were killed. However efforts are on to defuse the situation through military and diplomatic level talks.

After reviewing the LAC, the Defence Minister will then take stock of the LOC where Pakistan is constantly carrying out cease fire violations.
