India's Ambassador to the U.S. Vinay Mohan Kwatra welcomes CAS, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh as he begins his visit to the United States to further strengthen the IN-US defence partnership and sustain the strong & growing ties between the two Air Forces

Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, commenced a week-long official visit to the United States on Monday, April 6, 2026, aimed at further strengthening defence cooperation and advancing strategic ties between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the United States Air Force.

India's Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, welcomed the Air Chief on his arrival, highlighting the significance of the visit. "Pleasure to host and welcome CAS, Indian Air Force Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh as he begins his visit to the United States to further strengthen the India-US defence partnership and sustain the strong & growing ties between the two Air Forces," Kwatra posted on X.

During his visit, Air Chief Marshal Singh is expected to engage in high-level meetings with senior officials from the US Department of Defence and the leadership of the US Air Force

During his visit, Air Chief Marshal Singh is expected to engage in high-level meetings with senior officials from the US Department of Defence and the leadership of the US Air Force. His itinerary is likely to include visits to key military establishments such as the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., major air bases, and defence industry facilities. These engagements will focus on enhancing interoperability, operational cooperation, and exploring avenues for joint training and technology exchange.

The visit assumes added significance in the context of renewed strategic convergence between India and the United States in the Indo-Pacific region. In fact, it follows closely on the heels of US Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) Commander Admiral Samuel J. Paparo's visit to India from February 14 to 19. During that visit, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to shared security interests and closer military collaboration, according to an official statement from USINDOPACOM.

Air Chief Marshal Singh's trip also comes at a crucial time when India is pursuing a major modernisation drive for its airlift capabilities

Air Chief Marshal Singh's trip also comes at a crucial time when India is pursuing a major modernisation drive for its airlift capabilities. In March, the Defence Acquisition Council approved procurement proposals worth ₹2.38 lakh crore, including a programme to acquire 60 Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) for the IAF.

The MTA deal has attracted bids from leading global aerospace firms. US-based Lockheed Martin has offered its C-130J Super Hercules, while Brazil's Embraer has proposed the KC-390 Millennium. European aerospace major Airbus Defence and Space is also in contention with its A400M aircraft. Discussions during the visit may include interactions with these manufacturers as India evaluates options for the high-value contract.

Air Chief Marshal Singh's visit is expected to reinforce these efforts and provide fresh momentum to the evolving India–US defence relationship

However, the backdrop to the visit includes ongoing challenges in defence procurement. As reported earlier by the author, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has imposed liquidated damages on US-based GE Aerospace due to delays in the supply of F404 engines meant for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk-1A programme. The contract for 99 engines includes penalty clauses for delays, which HAL has invoked repeatedly as deliveries have lagged.

Despite such issues, both countries continue to expand their defence partnership, with increasing emphasis on co-development, co-production, and strengthening supply chain resilience. Air Chief Marshal Singh's visit is expected to reinforce these efforts and provide fresh momentum to the evolving India–US defence relationship.

Further details of his engagements and outcomes of the visit are expected to be released in the coming days.
