Newly expanded fighter base in South India

By SP's Special Correspondent

May 20, 2013: On May 27, Defence Minister A.K. Antony will inaugurate a newly expanded and enhanced Air Force base at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. The holy town will house what will become one of the Indian Air Force's (IAF's) most important bases in the south, likely to house squadrons of Su-30MKI, LCA Tejas and transport aircraft. From Thanjavur, the IAF will look to project power over the Indian Ocean and to keep tabs on the country's island territories on both flanks. What seems reasonably clear at this time is that a squadron of Su-30s will be the first addition to the base in the next year or two.

The runway has been extended for major base missions, with requisite infrastructure and landing aids. The base could also house refuelling aircraft in the near future, sources say. Air Headquarters is currently drawing up formal plans on what aircraft types to base at the newly refurbished and expanded Thanjavur station.
