Flight trials for GAGAN-aided Take-off/Landing System
By SP's Special Correspondent

October 06, 2014: The DRDO's Aeronatical Development Establishment (ADE) is looking to conduct manned aircraft flight trials of DGPS (differential GPS) for the Rustom I unmanned air system using an assisted take-off/landing system (ATOL) feeding off the GAGAN geo-navaigation system. The taxi and flight trials will be conducted at HAL Airport and Kolar Runway for evaluation of GAGAN DGPS based ATOL System. The paths to be traced by manned aircraft include runway centre line, surveyed co-ordinate points either side of the runway, parallel to runway centre line, offset 10 to 15 metres from centre line and xigzag pattern with 3 meter offset from the runway in either direction. The NexNav and GPS XR-6 receiver will be mounted in a jig with the antenna in the aircraft fielded by the winning vendor. The number of flight trials will be maximum 10 within a span of 1 month. More than one hour flight will be required at a time, according to ADE. The lab has also stipulated that vendor should have carried out flight evaluation of airborne equipment for defence use in the past and should submit document proving they have. Vendors will also have to carry out any mechanical modification of aircraft for fitment of equipment.
